Title: Server requirements
Post by: LAN@wasted on May 13, 2005, 12:17:01 PM
Well, if you want to run a 16- and a 12-slot server on 1 machine, what would be the requirements for it (besides a really good connection) ?

- CPU?
- Ram?
- Traffic??

and, would you happen to know what computer the Graffiti Servers are on? they seem to run 5 servers on 1 machine even :)

The requirements are pretty slim -- should run on about any CPU made in the last decade.  Certainly runs fine on my 400MHz celeron I've had for who knows how long.  I think it probably uses ~40megs of ram tops.  Traffic: I figure ~3k/s per client.  Graffiti are leased from... shoot, can't remember the name of it now, but it's a pretty expensive, high-end, professional hosting service.

I wonder what a good place to lease a server from would be...  We could probably get a really nice one if 5 or 6 people were willing to pay ~$20/mo.  One person paying $100/mo would be a bit much, though.

well, if a small system can handle a few servers, the only real problem will be traffic, right? so, how many GB/month would u need for, lets say, a 12- and a 16-slot server? any idea? (jitspoe said something about 3kb/s, but, would that be 120 GB/month if i calculated right, for the 16 slot server?)

That sounds about right.  I also did some tests -- looks like the dedicated server only takes 10-15 megs of ram (depending on map size/player count), and it only used 4% CPU, tops, on my 400MHz machine, so you could get away with a pretty crappy system for a server.  I'm actually considering getting like a 350MHz celeron/64MB ram server myself...

That $30/mo one sounds good... but do they let you have direct control over your server?  Ohh, it's Microsoft SQL.  At first I read that as mysql, and I was like, "Why would they change you extra for mysql.  If you have access to the server, you could just install it directly."  I certainly hope they give you more than ftp access, heh.  I don't see anywhere on the site that states you get ssh access, but it does mention game servers as a common use, so...

*** edit the above is the best I know. The below is conjecture.

The only thing to do, if you/we want a popular game is to pay for a multi-central located service. Being that almost all ISP service will be at least semi-broadband if not better in the next five years, its my belief to make this game superior is to take advantage of this structure at some point.

Don't know about their servers, but their scripting sucks. ;)

Respond with an angry message explaining that they shouldn't be so hasty to call someone 'sir'.

Thunderdome hosted the best q2 servers at q2's peek. They are located, funny enough in the central united states which would give all players a desent ping.

Servers would be as Jitspoe wanted of course...???  Let me know your opinion JItspoe.

Who hosts them?  Do you know?

Argh, CI Host wants me to sign a 12 month contract with them and pay the whole thing up front.  The contract basically says, "You have to pay the whole thing up front and there's no possible way you'll get a refund for anything.  If you try to get your money back, you'll be covering the cost of our lawyers, too.  Also, unless you do anything to stop us, we'll automatically charge you for the next 12-month terms as well."

If I knew the service was going to be good, I'd be willing to pay the whole thing up front, but I'd really like to be able to test it out before shelling out several hundred bucks, y'know?

Hmm, thanks for pointing out those reviews.  I'll kindly reject their "offer."
