Title: Weekly Pickup
Post by: jitspoe on February 20, 2005, 01:40:13 AM
Pickups will be held every 8 days so we cycle through all the days of the week hopefully giving everyone a chance to play.

Next pickup: Thursday, June 16th, 9:00PM EST

We talked about this some on IRC, but a few weeks have passed and it hasn't happened yet, so I'm starting it now, officially.

First pickup was Wednesday, Feb. 23rd, 9:00PM EST.

What's a pickup game?  Well, it's kind of like pub "the way it was meant to be played."  Preassigned teams, ffire on, good maps, match-style competition, but without the seriousness of a real match.  We'll assign teams in #pbpickup on irc.enterthegame.com (http://irc://irc.enterthegame.com/pbpickup).  If you can't get on IRC, post here and I'll PM you the password.

The days and time will change from week to week to accomodate different schedules/time zones.  It's not possible to make everyone happy at once, sorry.

Subtract 3 hrs, so 6PM.  Next week's pickup will be Thursday, May 3rd, 9PM EST, (6PM for you west-coasters).

Sorry, Rohypnol, but I can't do anything earlier on the weekdays because of work.  We'll do some weekend matches at some point, though.  Feel free to organize your own if you want.

Time for next week's?  Maybe just keep moving it up 1 day? Friday at say 10:00pm EST?

Any other suggestions?

I wonder if it might be better to keep a consistent date, ie: always 9:00 on Wednesday...  That would probably make it less confusing and easier for everyone to meet, but would exclude some people all the time.

Post by: jitspoe on March 04, 2005, 07:25:31 PM
We need suggestions before we can vote...  Also, it depends a bit on the player turnout.  If we have like 9v9 we obviously need larger maps that can accomodate that kind of volume.

Hmm, here's a few more: roundup, sphouse, encounter (though the middle flag kind of screws up the flagcapendsround), halfpipe, jump, midnight, midevil, mirror, palmtreea, sassult, siegecastle, ub_rooftop, pball_shreds1.

And, of course, the ones we've already played: hellsurvivors, brainstorm, castle1, summer, midnight2.

I think I'm going to make a random team assignment command for next pickup.  Make things a little easier. :)

loial21: I can't find ubhillside2002.  Where did you get it?

Oh, and the pickup after next will be pushed forward a day.  I don't think having it on Easter Sunday would work out too well. :)

Edit:  Since next week's pickup is at a reasonable time for you european players, you'd better show up -- probably won't happen again for another 5 weeks! :)

request* one of zimbo's map (name not known) "x " sumthing?

very tal map with a divider in the middle, has to long ramps on each side (extreme left/right)leading up aprox 60' to an exit points which lead back down into enemy base or a bunker up high. also has a series of "stairs" in the middle that allow top level access (this would be on top of the bunker) the flag is on a slightly raised base , enclosed by 10' to 12'  which can be accessed by going to back of base or by jumping off barrell over wall and on to flag platform.  Does not spawn with weapons and has only one cocker per side . Lots of  fun

Don't think that's the one... there's a barrel texture over an entire wall, but no barrels around the flag...
Title: Re: Weekly Pickup
Post by: loial21 on April 19, 2005, 08:16:46 PM
its not a barrel per say...more like a expended telephone cable reel........please forgive . twin towers ...perhaps

let me check but its fun, the stock of guns is compairable to midnight or battle 2 at worst (god help us) :)

Where did you play it?  Go to that server and type maplist to see the maps in rotation.  Then try loading some of them up to see which it is.

BTW, short word for "expended telephone cable reel on its side" is "spool."  And use spell check. :)

did use spell check all day yesterday....check server logs :)

I played it on a graph server in '05 and its no longer on rotation.

I'd have to come up with some automated method for the scores  I love you guys and all, but I'm not going to sit there and manually create records for all the pickup games.  I might be able to process the demos and get scores for all the pickup games thus far...

I apreciate you liking my maps Loial21 (notice i didn't say "latoya" :) )

But I'm not sure my three latest maps (the maps I hadn't ever really officially released but are on rotation on GT) are good for the pickup games.

1) Blarg: too tight with massively jumpy for FFIRE...lol...would be a hoot though.
2) Chilidog: possible, but everyone simply wants to fly across the ice.
3) Airtime: probably the most probable, but again, people seem to fixate on a jump and not the game.

These three maps were built as fun, jumpy, maps (except chilidog which was a study in manual terrain creation, but ended up being a super flying extravaganza).

If any one of these was to even be possibly considered I would say Airtime for game play, but lacks the pretty details (although every jump, landing, and placement was carefully planned). It has good r_speeds and could be incredibly competitive if people just got over trying to find all the jumps, and creating new ones (which really is fun!!!).

Jitspoe here they are if you want to have a look:

Yeah, I think your more recent maps are a bit small for the 10+ players that usually show up for the pickups.  If we have another small 3v3 turnout, they might work, but it's hard to plan for those.  Last time I did and we played antioch3, like 10 more people showed up a couple minutes in, lol.

Question: do you think we'd get a better turnout if we held this on the same day every week?  Like every Wednesday night?  Unfortunately participation has dropped significantly.  I guess it may just be because it's not a new thing anymore and people take it for granted...  There have been 3 or 4 people who have played almost every pickup, and now those 3 or 4 people are about all that show up.

What's the point of a password then?
Title: Re: Weekly Pickup
Post by: P!nk on June 11, 2005, 01:30:40 PM
Is it really necessary to "sign up" or can I just show up depending upon the time/date on which I can come? I will probably be attending my first pickup otherwise though  :)

Mantis: I would think this would be because people who aren't supposed to be there would fill up all the spaces provided on the server and each of them that would walk in would need to be briefed on whats going on, etc.

As far as map requests, I can try but you may find my suggestions unacceptable since some of them are kind of old; Roundup, supb, and Jump or Tents perhaps?

This may be the last time Iron allows me to post (lol) for a good reason...so just a map update: I hope to have it finished before school starts. The r_speeds are ranging from 1000-7000 and it's becoming gigantic. I have already thought of the perfect person to let modify it also if I cannot drastically lower the r_speeds. The test version will be posted in 3 months and it will possibly become a 4-team map.
Title: Re: Weekly Pickup
Post by: jitspoe on June 11, 2005, 06:18:26 PM
roundup and jumps make good pickup maps -- we've played those before.  Tents looks like it has an issue with the standalone, trans33+trans66 makes the textures use the alpha channel (so it can be used for fences and stuff).  Unfortunately it looks like that's what was done with the glass here so you can't see through it.  Also, I don't like the fact you have to climb a ladder to get to the flag -- if anybody's defending, you'd be pretty much guaranteed to get shot if you went after it.

I never cared for supb... for some reason it's really hard to see the yellow team on that map -- I think it's because the whole thing is practically fullbright.  Plus there's only one path, so... bleh.

Post by: jitspoe on June 16, 2005, 09:51:45 PM
Well, I was hoping the player count would increase and we could start playing bigger maps and even get some 4-team pickups going on, but alas, the player count has dwindled to practically nothing, so I think I'm going to stop doing pickups for a while.  I'll do them again when there's enough interest to make it worthwhile, but only having 2 or 3 people show up completely defeats the purpose of it.  On the plus side, there are more people playing regularly on the pubs -- perhaps there's a correlation?

I need as much time as I can get to put into development to get the next version ready in time for dpcon anyway.

Of course, if somebody else wants to run a pickup, go for it.
Title: Re: Weekly Pickup
Post by: loial21 on June 16, 2005, 10:28:20 PM
     Sadly Jits,

Those pubs were playing maps that you want ban. At the time of and after the pick up while I was waiting for others (iron, eiii, taco.. etc) and you, the IOD server was Full and on Que,waiting for players which at the time was playing (one of my personal favorites) Ice and Pb_CUP (A fps training ranked map)

Any ice maps are ok with me but one with a layout you cant hide from is truly god like for honing FPS skills PERIOD. Any "logical" rebuttals?

See through bunkers can not hurt anyone BTW.

Just like jumping on a jump map. Does this not make you a better jumper?

Speaking of jump maps do you wish to ban them also? :)

This is the best way to make players better, period. Maps to improve the player specific ability. Thus map ranking.

The leet ranked maps should be reserved for stats, min amount of players per map (duh) and matches plus pickups and all other manorism of digital paintball ranking, simple as it seems, now getting this organized, thats different.
Thus you leet geeks that care post to be all "knowing" come in to place (eiii, taco, iron) . Contribute some more time into making this game, the way average-player friendly game, a FPS paintball standard. More over if you have time to post make time to play please. I peronsally miss kicking your ass ;)

  Hosting pickups,

I can, but i need an abundance of maps for voted maps (on forum) which i have suggested.

Jits, you should start up the pickup again. There's no reason you shouldn't. If you just don't want to do it, i'll do it for you. :P

I think maybe this time around we should keep it on one day of the week -- say every Wednesday night?

Theen... we might as well set one up for next Wensday. Maps? (Okay, one HAS to be arenaball pong. It just has to. Unless there's a better pong map...)

BTW, #pbpickup is alive again.

there is one... BOK! my map it supports pong ;)
Title: Re: Weekly Pickup
Post by: Eiii on August 31, 2005, 07:38:41 PM
Hm. I looked over BOK, and it actually might work well for pong. Just make some more forward spawns for each team, pong specific, and make it so that some brushes block off the secondary route in pong.

HINT: Use the 'gamemode' key.

Also, if more than 8 people show up, (yeah, right) I think we'll play NORMAL crimethink instead of Pong Arenaball.

Post by: Cobo on August 31, 2005, 08:42:55 PM
:/ block the secondary path in pong....
im not sure, its very hard to make that ball go up the base from the main way.
and what entity shoould i make the brush so i can give it a gamemode value?
Title: Re: Weekly Pickup
Post by: Eiii on August 31, 2005, 10:03:52 PM
Just a normal brush will do. And also, for pong, make the base anywhere past the gate.
Title: Re: Weekly Pickup
Post by: jitspoe on August 31, 2005, 10:10:28 PM
A normal brush is worldspawn.  You want a func_wall, though we should probably play-test the map to see if closing off the alternate path is even necessary.

Well, If you get the ball about 1/4 of the way up the cave, then shoot it, it bounces straght into the goal.
Title: Re: Weekly Pickup
Post by: jitspoe on September 01, 2005, 02:02:51 PM
... if nobody's there to defend the goal.

Perhaps it would make a good DSM option.  When there are lots of people, it's harder to score goals.

The only way to "Defend" against that is to be standing in the exact spot. ;)
Title: Re: Weekly Pickup
Post by: Cobo on September 01, 2005, 04:10:25 PM
ok i made the func_wall entity and compiled it.
it works!
and what do you mean by past the gate, like all inside the base?
im not sure about that :/
Title: Re: Weekly Pickup
Post by: Eiii on September 01, 2005, 04:14:35 PM
Yes, ALL inside the base. BUT ONLY FOR PONG! You can't get a ball up a ladder. ;)
Title: Re: Weekly Pickup
Post by: Cobo on September 01, 2005, 05:02:46 PM
you can kick it so it goes up all the way up the gate to the base ;)
but that would be very very very very hard.

Oookay, cobo, we need that version of your map.

Also, THE PICKUP IS TODAY! If less than 6 people show up, it's not happening.

Will 10:00PM EST work?  I don't think I can make it by 9:00, and it seems most people come in late anyway...

Hm, I wonder if this forum has a way to post a time that will translate to whatever timezone the viewer has their options set to...

Also, my linux install is screwed up, so I haven't been able to build and test the new version on linux, so we won't be able to play pong tonight.

Argh.  I hate linux.  I managed to get it to compile, but it consistently crashed when a second person connected.  I tried to do a clean build, but my linux distro is so hosed now that it's missing all kinds of header files I used to have.  I couldn't track some of them down.  I really pushed the limit on my lunch break, so I had to get back to work.  I'll get the old version up and running tonight, but I definitely won't be able to make it before 10:00 now.

And we still won't be able to play pong.

I play this game in the dorms at collage, and I'm decent at it. . .. I'd like to play in one of your pick up games. . . . when is the next game and how do I connect to it?

There's almost always people available on the public servers online.  If your college's network permits you may be able to access online servers.
Once you're in the game, from the main menu, choose play, then choose join a game.  Press the update button to attempt to retrieve a list of servers online (if your college requires the use of proxies you may experience some difficulties here :().

Alternatively there's a live list of servers available at http://dpball.com/serverlist.php
You can connect to any of these by bringing the command console up within the game by pressing the ~ (tilde) and typing in the command:
connect ip.add.re.ss:port
ex: connect 69.93.11.66:27910

If it fails to connect for most of the servers it's likely that your college has blocked access to the internet game servers.

Let us know if you have any further problems.
