Title: Community Texture Pack (56k Warning)
Post by: y00tz on May 17, 2007, 11:41:08 AM
We're compiling textures created by users for maps.

What we need:
-Original textures (Original in the sense that YOU made it)
-Released under the GPL
-Permission to distribute the textures

or

Inspiration or source images of textures.

Texture criteria:
-minimum 256 pixels / hi-res(remember all tiles must be multiples of 2.)
-useful texture
-realistic looking
-tiles well

If you would like to participate, please post your textures below IN A ZIP FILE as well as the name you'd like added to the credits.  So far I've made all the textures, and honestly I could use some help.

Also, I'm now asking for original, good, releastic models (such as trashbins, chairs, computers, whatever) that you've created and released under the GPL.  Please see the Community Model Pack Post.

Thanks,
y00tz

I would really like to help, but I can't even get my own textures to work at this point.

The most I would probaly be able to do for you is to just send .bmp or jpeg pictures of the textures.

That'd be plenty of help man, really, I've been working away here non stop on getting some textures ready.  Could you upload your texture pics please?

Thanks!

sure.

Here are the only two that I have so far completed:
(Yes, some of the two might be misaligned)

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a33/kirby007dave/wood1-1.jpg

Here are some unfinished potentially useful textures:
All they really need is to be cropped and lens corrected.

Cool neon light

Another  neon light

A wall

Weird brick wall
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a33/kirby007dave/CIMG1533.jpg

I am still taking more pictures, but these were just the ones from yestarday and awhile ago. I'm also not sure if this is what you meant by uploading the texture pics.

Edit: Changed images to links for dial-up users.

I really like the this one, it would be good for the right kind of map.

I don't know why, but I don't have lens correction on my adobe photoshop 7.0.
Therefore I am not able to get that weird un- aligning thing from the lens.

I'm downloading Photoshop CS3 right now. So I'm going to start working on some textures tomorrow probably.

Meh. It has to be scaled down a lot to be usable, which could cause a problem with the r_speeds.

So does anybody know where I can upload a file without having to register?

Knock yourself out...
Includes: 1024, 512, 256, 128, 64, wal
Not all 100% complete.
http://www.logictechnologies.com/keith/textures/

It's very tough to get textures to look nice and tile properly.
Posting pictures made with you cell phone's camera do no good at all.
If you have to lens correct as much as looks needed in some of those images, then your camera is crap, or you don't know how to use it.

Sry for the dbl post but this is completely different from my last post heres a site that i found these free high res textures they are zipped in a archive and totally free acrooding to the author of this site there most jpegs but have some tga the site is http://berneyboy.planetquake.gamespy.com/textures.htm
this is wat the author says Disclaimer : Some images found in this archive were not created by me. These images were obtained from a number of sources on the Internet that labeled them as "freely distributable". Some of the authors of these graphics may not approve if the graphics are used commercially. all the source of the texutes are on the site ill post some screenies for ppl to see

some would have to change all of these texture from 512x512 to the normal 256x256

OMG! I feel so accepted now, lol.

When do you plan on realeasing the textures for us, map makers?

that one texture that you were asking about was like from a mat at a 99 cent store. I was probaly trying to get like a wall or ground texture or something.

If you liked those textures check out my newist pics:
http://www.mediafire.com/?551brmmgt5d

Warnning: 22.1mb takes awhile to download.

P.S. Now that I have taken, such great pics of textures for free? Hows about you give me your adobe photoshop serial? =) jk.

Then you'd be a fan of grass4 or lower (they get darker as the number increases)  that's grass 5. This is grass4:

Actually what I think I'll do soon, is release a pre-release of some of the textures as well as a map that uses only Community Textures.  If any well known mappers is interested in porting these textures into an existing well-known, good map, or in created something fresh, leave a message for me here.

There is a very good chance that I could use these for my map (Abandon All Hope (http://dplogin.com/forums/index.php?topic=6166.0)), that is coming along very slowly. I can't decide on what textures to use in some places.

I'll agree with ya there.
The problem lies in trying to balance a pseudo-3d look with a realistic look.

that fence is awesome
I have a bunch of textures to add if you want them...or did I already offer them?

http://www.logictechnologies.com/keith/textures/

in the base folder are a bunch of large JPGs and some directories.

In the base directory are the unmodified source JPG files.
In the subdirectories are processed JPGs as follows.

1024
512
256
128
64
wal

I believe they are self explanatory.
The only confusion may be in what two sized I chose to use for the corresponding WAL file (normal & h4r).

Most of these textures are being, or going to be, used for my Karkand map. So they are mostly Karkandish looking.

I have a nice set of replacement barrel textures also. They might require some tweaking.

here's some old SShots with some of the textures:

S8NSSON:  I noticed some of these textures are watermarked with www.mayang.com/textures/, did you take any of these pictures?  If not it's fine because we can probably produce most of them ourselves.  If we used these we couldn't release the pack under the GPL, which would also mean it would definitely never be bundled with Paintball2.  Thanks for the help though :) :) :D

So far, everything has been made from pictures taken by Nitroboy, ViciouZ, and myself.   On a side note, if you have a digital camera and know of some cool textures are your place, take some snapshots for me :)

Also, I read earlier that you release all your .map files, and I was wondering if I get a hold of one just to replace the textures with the ones that we've made for the community texture pack, as sort of a demo.  Is that possible?

Cheers and thanks,
y00tz

*edit - maybe we could use some of these and make our own from them, I'll check.

A lot of the images were obtained from mayang.
Personally, I don't care about this license crap, and I have no care about including anything with DP officially.

If you are operating under the assumption these textures are going to be placed in the game you may end up being frustrated at best. Jitspoe is very particular on what he will include in the game.

My advice is to make the texture pack without any association with DP. Anyone and everyone can use them to create maps and play maps without concern.

It's a free game under GPL. It's not bringing in revenue. I believe my obtained textures (some bought, some obtained legally free, none stolen) are perfectly fine to use in the game, although they may not legally be placed under a GPL license, that I know of.

From Mayang:
Quote
Q) What can I use the textures for?

A)You can use the textures in your school projects, to make CD sleeves, posters, in movies, in videogames etc - anything where you have added your own artistic effort.

You cannot use the textures for anything that directly competes with us.  This includes, putting the textures on your own website, selling them, or giving them away.  This restriction includes the textures themselves, as well as any minor modifications, for example, you may not make our texture seamless or tileable and then sell them.

Doesn't matter to me. Do what you will.
I will use them whether anyone likes it or not.
Or until the texture police come knocking at my door...oh nooooooes!

No argument here :)
I realize that these have probably a 10% chance of making it into the game.  What I'm more interested in is having them hosted here so that more players have them.  If we don't stick with the GPL we have a 0% chance of getting them in game.  Also, if we can use the GPL, then other open-source projects can benefit from the project as well.

From that quote:

Giving them away is entirely what the plan is here.

I'm not trying to be a punk or a GPL fanboy, I'm just thinking that so far we have done great on our own, maybe we can finish it.

Thanks a lot S8NSSON for helping and putting such effort in to this :) :D

Also, do you mind posting one of your .maps?  Something like AirTime, that everyone is familiar with?

And I think you're completely allowed to use the texture in a map, because the textures are a supplement, and you're not just giving them away

Thanks so much,
y00tz

p.s. I can't wait for Karkand :D

That's not entirely true. You can create a map with any textures you like, including company logos or whatever, and have them included with your map. Maybe Jitspoe's "official" servers may block them, but they would definitely be able to be placed on other servers.

Abiding by the GPL would indeed allow you to "give" the textures away to anyone under the sun. I don't much care about these other goons in other GPL mods anyways. I make maps for DP. That's all I care about. These other mods can get their own, or use the ones I have, I could care less.

I think I'll make a corporations of America map that is 100% illegal textures just because I can. That's what I think about GPL & this copyright crap in this "free" game.

Here's a bunch of my maps (every map I still have, that I have done). They are all GPL approved (except Karkand with the non-GPL textures in it).
Check out blackhawk.map...pretty cool helo! Planned to be the extraction base for my reverse siege mode Karkand idea.

Good work, y00tz.  A couple things you need to keep in mind are tiling and scale.  In that grass texture, for example, there is a single leaf (or similar light-colored object) in the texture and you can see it repeating multiple times.  The clone tool is really handy for fixing things like that.  I find for grass, a small brush with a hard edge works best.

As for scale, that picture you posted with trracer... the leaves look big compared to the trracer, which is already way oversized, so you're going to end up with leaves that are like 2-3 feet wide.  1 foot =~ 9.3 units.  With HR4 textures, that's about 37 pixels.
Title: Re: Community Texture & Model Pack (56K =()
Post by: y00tz on June 05, 2007, 05:35:55 PM
Thanks :D

I'm usually self-conscious about repeating anomalies, but as I play ArmA, a very well-done, professional game.  I notice more and more the anomalies, but as I play, and run, I never see them.  Only when I'm spectating or sniping.

Also, the ground with the leaves was tough to even get them that small.  I subdivided them 4 times! :)  I think I'll just go take a picture with smaller leaves.

I guess I do have to work on resizing them a lot.  I still wish he had bigger character models.  Jitspoe himself has said that our crouching models are some of the smallest hit boxes around.  I really hope some cool maps are made with this stuff and our community picks up.  Maybe once some of the great texture makers in our community start pitching in, people will say, 'Is that mod for Half-Life 2?'

I could model it. But there is one problem: my md2 exporter (form Blender) doesn't want to work. I'll have to find another way to convert it or make it.

Modeling the fence would lead to some really high r_speeds.  You could possibly model parts of the fence, like horizontal bars, to help add a little bit of depth, but the vertical posts I think would need to stay a texture, unless you're doing really small sections of fence in an enclosed area where you can afford the polygons.

You and I both know that it flattens when you look at it from above or directly from the side.  An intelligent mapper will factor this in.  In certain cases it will look better than the very flat looking cliffs.

Yeah bro, I think I have something that would look great on that well (is it a well? I haven't checked your reply on the picture request yet) in Babylon.  I actually made these cliffs after looking at a screeny of someone else's map.

But what you're talking about could be done in BSP.  All you would do is make several smaller cylinders (each cylinder about the same size as a tire) all stacked atop one another  and then move them around as you would like.

Wow,
Talk about a surprise.
I leave to Costa Rica, get my hands on an iBook, and now I have a developer tag? Maybe I should leave more often...

I had taken the most stunning textures in Chicago, Tulsa, Atlanta, and their respective airports.  I had almost 1,000 hi-resolution photos on my camera.  Before it was stolen.

The good news is I bought an SD card and I'm using my girlfriend's 3.2 MP.

I've got lots of cool textures, and you guys will love the cool stuff that can be done with them.
But I'm still very bummed about losing the pictures & camera...

Anyway,
Cheers,

I flew from Springfield Regional into O'Hare, then O'hare to Tulsa, Tulsa to Atlanta.  I had it in my carry-on when I boarded my flight to Atlanta, but the flight attendant was a pushy little woman who insisted that I couldn't hold my carry-on in my lap.  Anyway, fell asleep, and the lady put it in the overhead compartment.  She said it fell in the aisle while she was trying to do meal service, anyway, no camera when I awoke.

It happens.

stuff awaits you below

Anyway, I'm back and I'm putting 300 textures through Photoshop over the next couple of days, all from Costa Rica.  I've also gotten better at touching up my early textures and making new ones.  Anyway I'll start posting some shots as they come through.  This first one is just a quicky from a building below the hotel.

Second - tiles.  I took lots of tile pics in Costa Rica, I think you guys will enjoy it.

3rd & 4th are grass textures I made to look like the old grass textures that DP uses.  Comes in two shades.

Edit: Hey you see the border around the grass you should make those other colours to like blue or green.

I have similar ones to it that are different colors.
It's not just like I changed the hue, but I actually made another type of tile for each color.
Note the difference in the tile designs:
(see pic)

edit
but on the other hand, this pack isn't about new tile variations, you know?  It's about stuff like that roof - that was never available to mappers.  Maps are defined by the availability of textures, and I want to break that.

*steps down from soap box

I have a terrabyte.  But I run out a lot, not just from textures, software I develop or all the programs and games I have, but usually because my tv tuner + pvr combo records so much TV that I never watch :P

When you map, you don't do something like 'a farm' you make a map that reminds people of a farm, by having a barn, farm house, etc.  Not animals.

Maybe someone that lives near a farm could get some hay textures? Or just use ones like this:

http://www.aswatama.com/assets/images/products/Feeds/Hay/Hay-002.jpg
http://www.aswatama.com/assets/images/products/Feeds/Hay/Hay-001.jpg
http://ces.uwyo.edu/haylist/web%20hay.jpg
http://www.californiapictures.com/images/hay-bales-01.jpg
http://www.manukachaff.com.au/manuka/img/Hay.jpg

Yes, I know that there is that one thing about how we can't use textures online without permision, but I highly doubt that anybody that owns these pictures would be playing this game, or even come across the map that has "Their" Hay texture. Besides, they might not even notice it was "Their" hay.

Edit.
Uhoh.
While working on a hay texture (the one in the pic isn't the final one, just a text)  it's occured to me that maps like ProPaint1, and NiteFactor (pictured)  use the hay texture for wood.   :-\

p.s. - anyone know off the top off their head (or can determine with their good eyes) what texture is used for the trees?  Looks like one of the grass1_x series.. idk.

That's their own fault for using hay textures. :P  Best we can do is try to get hay that's aligned along the length so it matches up kind of close to what the old texture looked like, rather than looking like a wad of grass.

Nitroboy: First two are pretty much what I'm looking for, but I don't think the resolution is high enough to work with and I'd prefer to keep things 100% legal with the new media.

That's a good question.  For everyone who is curious, he is referring to this picture: http://dplogin.com/forums/index.php?topic=6442.msg75135#msg75135.

To get the character model, I didn't start a new game or anything, I merely used a map entity called "func_model" and used the .md2 model of the player, which unfortunately is not skinned, hence the white.

Cheers,
y00tz

As most of you know, I have modified some content, but just my crosshair, HUD, and I've created various high-resolution textures.
I'll be frank, I do not consider this cheating.  I do respect the opinion of anyone who disagrees.

There's been some re-working of textures as of late, but I've yet to secure a mapper for the pre-release maps, which means I'll just release the SDK first...

Also, most of the grass textures I *think* I will remove and just put them out as replacements for current HR4 grass.

I use wally you get it off the files page and as y00tz said I figure it oit as I go noirmally take pic then make the dimensions multiples of 16 then put it on wally convert it to .wal then tile it make it so you can tell the difference between tiles using blending and rarely but sometimes just straight painting. I figured that out in 10 minutes lol :P

What? The only thing I understood was the comment that made everyone laugh.

I had like a really good marble texture, that would of looked nice, but I took a high speed picture of this one kid with the flash on, and he grabbed my camera and tried to delete his pictures, but ended up deleting that one texture. I was so pissed at him. *sigh*, its hard being 1 out of 2 8th graders in a high school marching band.

K, here is the first one. This is only all the bad ones because there was a 100mb limit on the files. I will break the files that have the best textures up and upload them. But for now:

I think I'm getting better at making textures from sources.. when I began the CTP I had no idea how to do it, and now I've picked up a few techniques that I'm perfecting... How do these look? Considering most of them came from "possible textures" and not "good textures"

They don't have to be seamless, I don't think anyone has turned in a texture yet that has been.  I can make a photo sourced texture into a seamless texture.  Pretty much anything, short of a solid white box, I can work with.  Planning on submitting something?

Well, starting with snow...
http://dplogin.com/files/rawphotos/snow/

Wait an hour or two before trying to download anything, though.  I've got I think 17 (very large) photos on the way.  The problem with snow is that... well, unless there's stuff sticking out of it, it's pretty much all white.  I included a little variety, but not all 80+ photos I have. :P  Mostly just stuff that could potentially tile well (or sections of them can).

Edit: Done.

Wrong!
All textures used with this game have to be GPL'd, I believe. You could probably attach a license to them, but that would be a pain.

Eh, not necessarily.  GPL is a little vague when it comes to media.  There are several projects that use proprietary media with GPL engines.  That said, I'd still like to get everything  put under the GPL just for simplicity.  Plus, the GPL is about distribution.  If you distribute non-gpl content by itself, there are no issues.  Distributing non-gpl content with a gpl game may be questionable, but I'm no lawyer.

What I would like to see is textures related to textures that you would normally see in halo. I don't know how someone would make it, but I think it would really add detail and more of a feel to certain maps. If you need an example of what the texture might look like, then I could take pictures later tonight, but only if you want/need them. This is just my two cents, but it would be nice to see textures like that.

P.S. yootz, I'm addicted to halo, please help me!

I am working on the biggest batch of new textures yet... this will be under a compilation of known as the "Urban Pack".

I have spent the last week and this weekend photographing, so if you see me in IRC or in-game tell me to get my bum to work so I can finish this pack before the mapping contest deadline.

Included:

Could be as little as 25 that turn out well, but I seriously expect this pack to be over 50 textures.

--------------

The Community Texture Pack ("CTP") is a user-lead, community-created texture compilation. It features many unique and high-resolution textures not found in the official release of Paintball II.

The current status of the CTP is at milestone 0.8, and features roughly 120-140 textures.  The CTP currently consists of:

But by milestone 1.0, the CTP team hopes to include a variety of Sci-Fi, outdoor, indoor, urban, and even "cartoonish" textures.

The CTP is available for download on DPCommunity sites such as OTB's FTP Server, Sk89q's Digital Paint Resource Site (digitalpaint.therisenrealm.com), and recently Leezer.com.

Hmm, I don't know, heh.  512/4 = 128;
1/10 or so * 128 = 12-13 pixels each? Eeek.  I'll just make them 256 HR4s which would make the foot prints feel about a few inches wide by about a foot long.

Thanks
Title: Re: Community Texture Pack (56k Warning)
Post by: jitspoe on November 08, 2007, 06:22:05 PM
One foot is ~37-38 pixels on a hr4 texture if I did my calculations right.

Post by: y00tz on November 09, 2007, 12:18:52 AM
player model pixels height/human height * hr4 scale = 38px.  Looks good to me, thanks.  I have 12 textures that I'm comfortable with releasing right now.. I'll try to get some more before tomorrow.
Thanks,
y00tz

I've set up a reservoir for the CTP and CMP so that as I develop them, you guys can immediately download them and put them in maps.  I'll probably do a monthly 'build' and group them all in a zip for ease of download.  I'll populate the CTP and CMP reservoirs ASAP.  The CMP reservoir will probably feel very empty though :-\

Edit:

I'll use the method XtremeBain proposed for Paintball2 build numbers.. but without build numbers, just names and dates (i.e. CMP071231.zip  or  CTP080302.zip)

If anyone else can get some pictures of tree branches (preferably against the blue sky, so I can key it out), then I can finish some tree models...  I know most areas are about to go out of season... but if you can still get some green leaves, that'd be great.  Although I do want a lot of fall colors, as well as leaf-less trees.

Suggestion on that red tile floor -- I'm not sure if it's the lighting or what, but there's some funky patterns going on with the shades of red that look really weird, especially from a distance.  Perhaps cut and paste some tiles from different sections to mix it up a little bit so you don't have the checkered gradient thing going on -- or was that what the real tiles looked like?  I keep thinking it's some kind of tech texture at a distance - like something you'd see in doom or star trek.

Title: Re: Community Texture Pack (56k Warning)
Post by: y00tz on January 13, 2008, 11:42:49 PM
From player perspective it's quite good, most 1024's tend to be, but anything from there is relative... zoom out a lot, then yeah it'll texture badly, stand a couple player heights above and it's not bad.
Title: Re: Community Texture Pack (56k Warning)
Post by: jitspoe on January 14, 2008, 02:53:44 PM
Hm, looks like you tiled it and added some color variations.  I think this would work better with RScripts, having one layer be the grass, and another be the color variation.  Then you could have the variation be low res, but scaled large, and it wouldn't have the tiling problem at a distance and you wouldn't be using as much texture memory.
Title: Re: Community Texture Pack (56k Warning)
Post by: y00tz on January 16, 2008, 10:59:50 PM
What is possible with rscripts?  My understanding is that it's pretty much shaders?

Specifically could I make a specular map/effect on a skin or texture?  If so that would be amazing...
edit: Is the new model's mask a specular map, and if so is that done via rscripts?

From what I saw rscripts looked like stuff from the OpenGL API so I was intrigued but never caught on.

I think it'd be neat to compile a list of things possible with rscripts so that maybe we could get some common scripts out for people to use in maps...

This is just a quick example.  I took the brick1_1 texture, and put "Mr. Text" on it.

.bsp, .map, textures, and script inside.

Perhaps if you were to combine two or more textures in the correct way, you would get rid of the tiling effect.  I've seen other games that do this and it looks great.

I think that's what Jits was describing about 10 posts back, I don't know really.  I'm seriously interested in a feature request for shaders, but when it was suggested in the OFVT 2007, I recall a post saying r_scripts essentially could do the same things.... if that's the case then I'd be a happy man.

I'm redoing some of the bricks, taking a better approach, less from photosource, more Photoshop.

Also, here's a little something I whipped up, I won't use it but I like the technique and I'll try to do it again with less contrast between stones.

I spent my lunch today photographing downtown.  I made a bark that I like, but should I try to make an HR4 replacement for the current bark, or add it to the ctp?  The second shot is the higher res version, both are seamless at the moment.

Also included a branch that's going on my next tree model, and then my wooden fence for my urban map, which is almost finished.. the fence that is ;)

edit- added next incarnation of the tree branch

Please do rotate the branches/leaves some so they don't look quite so arranged. :3
Other than that, more great work. I think jits may have demonstrated a similar technique some time ago in response to my cardboard-trees, but I can't remember anything about it.

I mean the brush/face upon which the leaves are drawn, not the individual leaves.

I believe there are 3 different bark textures.  That would probably work for one of them.  Have you tried it in-game?  I wonder how well it tiles (probably the only maps you need to worry about that on are airtime*.bsp).  To cut down on the fuzziness, use a small, hard-edged brush with the clone stamp.

Oh I was just showing you guys that it tiles kind of nice, it's actually a fullsize of 256, proportionately it should probably be 128.

These would help a lot.
Title: Re: Community Texture Pack (56k Warning)
Post by: y00tz on April 30, 2008, 07:53:03 PM
By the way I tossed out that floor when I woke up this morning, the idea started well but in the end  (way after the pic I posted above) it was obvious I was trying to add effects that shouldn't be in the texture.  I did come up with a neat variation of it, and I'll have to post it soon.

Clipz and Termin8or, I would love to get these out, honestly, I'm not sitting on my arse counting my money all day (my dad always uses that expression - I don't know how well it translates),  when it comes to releasing something like the CTP, there's quality control issues (I'm sure a lot of you thought that was absent in the last release), balancing, as well as attaining an overall theme.  Also, the CTP is literally hundreds of files I have to check and double-check to make sure the nomenclature is correct, if I have the right layer comp from the .psd, on top of the usual seamless, anamoly issues.  Then when you begin to factor in raising the bar, i.e. the stuff that I had in the first release just looks like a joke to me now compared to the lava and cliff posted above (and a lot more *better* textures), the time really adds up.

To quote anyone who has ever done anything game development related...

"I just wish there was more time in the day."

edit:
While I'm at this point.. just think about Jitspoe's paintball 2 releases... in the last 6 months he's posted probably 4-5 complete builds, with relatively few bugs or errors, while continuing to improve the overall quality and featurelist, and atop of that he's never really left out files .. of the hundreds of files in the game.

It's probably not a surprise that he posts new builds during the hours most of us sleep..  Kind of makes you think twice before posting a feature request.

*returns to GTA*

Scrolling back and forth over IMG_1915.jpg is tripping me out...

For future shots, you'll want to try to avoid that FOV warp as it's a pain to edit out.  Usually you just need to zoom in as far as you can and get further back before taking a photo.  You might want to line up the camera on a brick wall to and adjust the zoom until all edges are straight, then just use that zoom for every shot.  It will make editing much easier.
