hi all. i've been playing for about a week or 2, but i suck pretty bad. but i'm sure i'm not using the game to my full advantage (i.e. i'm sure there are features that i don't know about that would help me). i'd like to learn about all the console commands and stuff (the docs only mention very few).
for starters: somebody told me to type impulse 3000, and it screwed me up royally. i'd like to know what that command does exactly, and what the number means.
also what are some other commonly used commands?
i'm sure there are enough l33t players here to help me out..
-
There are really no console commands to extremely help your game. Learning the physics is the most important thing (ball flight and strafe jumping mainly)
-
honestly, i don't really care how much they help, i just want to know what kind of options are out there.
strafe jumping -- i wouldn't exactly say that i've mastered it. :) i can do it, but i can't seem to do anything else well when i do it.
-
Practice, practice, practice is all I can say. :D
As for console commands, there really aren't any to know like Spook said unless you are a server admin because those are easier to use than always going to the menus.
-
Yeah just experiment with strafing and shooting techniques...
some console commands that I've used
bind mwheelup hand1
bind mwheeldown hand3
bind mouse3 hand2
umm
maxfps stuff..
That's pretty much it...
Some help may be to download a hi-res texture pack... it makes the textures easier to make out and what not (good for visual distance calculating) also turn on reflective water... that can be a benefit on maps like battle2.bsp
-
You can get the high-res texture pack/packs here (http://dplogin.com/forums/index.php?topic=5661.0).
I can't remember for sure but I think you just extract them to the textures folder.
-
y00tz stole my hand binds :P

Yeah forgot about the fps commands although I don't use them that much. They are more for those worthless jump maps that I own (sorry Spook ;D).
Reflective Water=VERY NICE (although at times it can kill your fps)
-
y00tz stole my hand binds :P
Haha I actually did.. you posted them somewhere and I thought, 'hey those are good!'
-
KiLo it's ok that you live in your own dream world.
Y00tz, i hand out my config file all the time, i could care less that you use one little part of it haha
-

Haha. I think that was to stop cheaters dead in their tracks. I read somewhere in these forums that one of the wallhacks or some similar hack used that command, and just to screw with them, and naturally render the cheat useless, Jits made it do what you experienced. If I ever find the thread I'll post a link to it.
-
webhead I have a good command for you.
Type impulse 101 in the console. ;D
-
"omg make it stop"
-y00tz after he tried impulse 101
"omg don't stop"
-The banana to the left of this post

If it's what I am thinking I don't even want to know. :)
If it's not what I am thinking then you need to unconfuse me. ???
-
umm
maxfps stuff..
as in??

thanks for answering that. good to know. but what is the impulse command made to do??
also one other thing. how does this rating thing work (on the forums)?
-
I think you missed it...
He said that a cheat had that line in there so jitspoe (the developer) made it so that it makes it go crazy..

maxfps=maximum frames per second
In my opinion the impulse command is there to piss you off. (Or to do what y00tz said above)
The rating works by people evaluating your posts and how helpful or unhelpful they are. You must have 50 posts before you can give people +'s or -'s. Don't be surprised if you get a negative rating either because about 97% of the members here have negative ratings.

yes i got that, i was just wondering what it did before he crippled it?
maxfps=maximum frames per second
yes i know, but when you say "maxfps stuff" in with "console commands i've used" what kind of commands does that entail?
-
I think they're something like this:
cl_locknetfps 0
cl_maxfps 0
gl_swapinterval 0
-
cl_sleep 0
cl_cmdrate 80
-
and so what do those do?
-
cl_locknetfps 0
cl_maxfps 0
gl_swapinterval 0
I know that these help to raise your fps.
-
I think Spook's are for better network speeds, idk for sure though.
-
Impule was origionally used to execute certain commands, like impulse 0 switched from the shotgun to the axe. They call certain commands based on the number. But some cheaters used impulse commands in wallhacks and aimbots and such, so, seeing as it wasn't used in any other circumstances, jitspoe crippled it so cheaters would get pissed.
-
Impulse isn't used for anything in Quake2/Paintball2. It was used in Quake1, but Quake2 introduced specific commands for things like switching weapons. Some cheats used the impulse command to activate features, but the impulse command by itself does nothing (aside from messing with your view). I should probably take that little "feature" out.
As for the ins and outs of the game -- the key thing is to learn how to lead your opponent and predict where they will go. You also need to have a good understanding of each map -- where you can position yourself to guard different entrances and where you can attack from that isn't easily guarded.
-
where you can position yourself to guard different entrances
:o FTW. Dam those one path maps!
-
wow jits that sounds like an elite level skill (but i'd expect no less)!
seems like it'd be a cool idea for someone to host a tutorial server for all us noobs out there :)
although its easy to feel that way after getting pwned badly tonight on a few maps! but hey, getting pwned badly is what noobs do, right? :)
-
maybe not a server but a tutorial demo that answers all the questions new players ask like "how do you jump so far and fast" or "how do i pick up a gun"
-
ya sure, that would be great too.

Isn't a lot of that stuff answered on the FAQ Page (http://digitalpaint.planetquake.gamespy.com/docs.html).
-
kinda, but an actual playable tutorial would be better. plus it could cover additional stuff that's not on the FAQ list.

Check out that link, it may help some.
-
cool! how'd you get to that?
edit: i might also mention this link i found. it's really geared toward quake 2, but i'm sure most of it generally applies to this game too.

Well this one (http://digitalpaint.planetquake.gamespy.com/testwiki1/pb2wiki.php?word=Commands+and+Settings) is a bit more geared for DP. ;) It is just a list of commands, but there are numerous pages that could be found useful in the Wiki (http://digitalpaint.planetquake.gamespy.com/testwiki1/pb2wiki.php?word=Welcome+Page)

bind mwheelup hand1 - When I scroll up my gun goes into my left hand
bind mwheeldown hand3 - When I scroll down it goes to my right
bind mouse3 hand2 - when I click the middle mouse button, it centers it.
-
haha y00tz, if you want you can just take my whole config :P
-
ok so i guess what i'm really looking for is some sort of listing of all the commands i see in my config file and what they do. is there any such thing?
cuz the quake commands site i found doesn't mention all of them. in fact, quite a lot of them aren't mentioned.

I'm not sure if all of them are in there, but see where Zorchenhimer wrote "this one"? Well thats a link to most of the documented commands.
Here's the link again: this one (http://digitalpaint.planetquake.gamespy.com/testwiki1/pb2wiki.php?word=Commands+and+Settings)
-
yes, i've checked that out. my point is that there are many commands/settings that seem to be undocumented.

I see, well I made a post in the Wiki Community Effort: Tutorial's thread. Hopefully someone will add them.

hey, just found this in another post around here. maybe i could be of help by posting it here.
http://digitalpaint.therisenrealm.com/reference/commands
-
type crosshair 1
then crosshair 2
and so on and it gives you different crosshairs
-
ya i know about that one but thx anyway.
