Title: tournaments.
Post by: toM|vendettA on October 30, 2006, 11:54:29 AM
Just a quick question, how many people have paypal (confirmed and verified and all that jazz)?

We were thinking about setting up a 2v2 tournament with a $1 or $2 entry fee, but only if there are enough people to make it worth while (like 5-10 teams.)

I know the question of trust comes up, and I know alot of you probally wont trust me holding money. Because of this we would use a middle man, if he wouldn't mind than probally jitspoe, and if not than another community elder (knack, sad, calrathan?)

If not playing for money than maybe someone would be willing to donate a server.

The winning team of the 2v2 gets login for a week to the server and can choose the maplist and stuff like that.

FourthX used to host 1v1 and 2v2 tournaments all the time, and they were a ton of fun, it would be cool if we could get them going again.

i remember the 1v1 and 2v2 tourneys eR33t would host back in the day, just one night all night play.  it was a lot of fun.  Even the pickups that we would play were fun back then.  Giving a login for a server for like a week would be a cool thing, have a weekly 1v1 or 2v2 tourney and give out like 50ops (lvl 1 on ch1ll servers) to the winning team.

I have paypal, but I agree with DT's statements about maps.

Unless, of course, the map is Oddjob, then all 1v1 and 2v2's are great

pgp is a good 1v1 map, and i wouldnt go so far as to say all the maps 'suck' but rather call them very trite and overplayed

What a waste of time, who wants to have login and control a maplist to a server for a week? More of a hassle than anything.

Have you ever participated in an event like this? I remember back when fourthx hosted them they were a ton of fun, half of it is finding a good partner. A waste of time for the login? It takes 5 minutes to change a login and setup a new maplist. Every saturday there would be a new tournament to determine who gets the login.

And while your statement is partially correct dirtytaco, I can think of a few good 2v2/1v1 maps that would be fun, splatMesa, clubpb, strap, shazam (normal one.)

I wouldn't pay. Sounds like a great idea. I don't see why money would go to tommy v unless he is putting in large amounts of work.

I mean that you send me or a middle man the money to enter. After the tournament I send the money to the winners.

if money were involved, its obvious that a team composted of like bob/dt/y2j/blitz would come in and take it. so why bother with $$

nah, I think dt,blitz,bob,y2j would get raped by jman munchies and skater. i bet dt would change teams after every round lmao.

lmfao, he was joking...clearly just pissed off at Smokey causing trouble with you. You kissed up to skater enough for him to say that...good try though, kid. I advise that you stop arguing about this, it's way off topic, and I'm sure it's going to be deleted. Anyway, on the actual topic, I think that you should reconsider the money factor...it would be cool, but not everyone is going to pay money to play in a tournament. Then again, I'm just a broke tightwad, so it may be just me.

Title: Re: tournaments.
Post by: blaa on October 31, 2006, 12:55:37 AM
i would´nt pay, the reason itself is`nt that i could`nt afford it or anything, but why would i want to win in a game which i play only for fun? Should that money make things interesting or something? To me, no.
I would like to name some maps too:
overrun
midnight
hunt
warhouse
encounter

Hunt and warhouse are with big questionmark.

Anyways, good luck tom. Don't count Europeans out! any idea how long would those tourneys last? Approximately.

There is so many things I want to say about so many posts in this thread. However, I will just save my time and a temp-ban and simply say that this is a bad idea. Any tournament under 4v4 is pointless and boring.

Title: Re: tournaments.
Post by: b00nlander on October 31, 2006, 09:30:18 AM
In my opinion, 2v2 tournaments work out quite well, much better indeed than any organized 4v4 event, just for the fact that there is more and especially more dedicated participation included. As seen in the good effort for the 4v4 PBCup, there are only 3 or 4 teams that would be willing to play a full season. A 4v4 "tournament" probably couldnt be arranged to be happening on 1 day, so the league was the better idea there.
As for the 2v2 tournaments, I've seen some tournys work out fine, and havent seen a team dropping out early. And while I agree with DirtyTaco that 2v2 gameplay is not as much fun and the maps that fit a 2v2 tournament arent as good as bigger maps, I still think a 2v2 tournament might be quite enjoyable for many players.

Im not talking about a 4v4 tournament that stretches out over weeks like pbcup, im talking about a 2 hour (or however long it takes) tournament.

aside from the usual kids badmouthing every idea that anyone ever has, i think a series of 2v2 tournaments would be good, it would help the community get to know one another better, improve player skills, and get the community involved in irc and some sorta of organized play.

If it would last like 2 hours, and wouldn't start later than 20GMT, then i think several European clans would want in too. But i think you cant care less about euro teams...

Middle man here. Send me your money. I cover odds and over/under.

I bet Bob and Blitz would crush Y2j and Digi.

Honestly I will pay to see that, if they promise not to quit in writing.

European teams would be hard because it would be hard to satisfy both teams with ping/servers etc, though if they are willing to play on american servers then surely they could enter.

Title: Re: tournaments.
Post by: JOE on November 01, 2006, 09:57:00 AM
a 2v2 tournament would take more than 2 hours, unless you had multiple match servers running with the specified configuration at the same time.  This has worked in the past and was actually quite effective.

DaRkNeSS: I love how you rant about stuff when it clearly has nothing to do with the topic. You lost to smokey's clan. oh noes. we dont care and it has nothing to do with us planning this tournament.

Anyway, I talked to a server admin and he said they will donate a server to give the login to, and would dedicate match servers for it.

Indeed.

And if the goal is to build community then please consider a noob tournatment as well.

You could call them professional and recreation brackets and the person can determine where they fit best.

That way you can have players who have no chance of winning in the upper ranks still participating.

Title: Re: tournaments.
Post by: JOE on November 01, 2006, 03:47:16 PM
another idea would be randomly assigning teams
Title: Re: tournaments.
Post by: m7feettall on November 01, 2006, 04:02:39 PM
The problem with randomly assigning teams is that it handicaps some of the better players. They should have a chance to compete at their level, and a teammate who cannot do that is not going to be much fun. Especially if some of the other top players do wind up together.

A separate ladder for those who feel they are not at that level would allow for everyone to participate where they are comfortable.

The only problem I can forsee is that some of the better players might join the noob ladder...but I doubt that would happen.
