Title: Right now is a good time to back up your data.
Post by: jitspoe on May 14, 2006, 01:03:13 AM
Why right now?  Because later, it might not be there anymore.

Mr. Bill! We love you, despite the fact that we laugh at your pain every time you and your cute little dog Spot are horribly mutilated on the show!

By the way, Jits, acting on your advice, I just made this (http://img128.imageshack.us/img128/2738/backup2nh.png)

It's a backup of ALL my PB stuff (including the {ROCK} webserver), so if anything happens, all your precious jump map packs won't go kablooie, Impsy. :D

The cheap WD drive I got from woot went belly up.  Fortunately I tried to avoid putting anything valuable on there because I don't trust WD.  I used it for games, anime, and downloads, mostly.  Stuff I can re-obtain, but it's still a pain.  I wish I could at least get it to work long enough to get a file listing, so I'd know what I need to get again.  Oh well.

Jit,

If it's the drive itself and not the ide interface, put it in the freezer for a few hours, hook it up, and get what you can.  If that doesn't work, try the opposite: put it in the oven, 170 degrees, for a bit , then hook it up.

Might get something.

I tried the freezer thing.  Didn't work.  I'm not about to bake my drive, lol.

Remember:

Too much heat and the solder on the circuit board will melt off....

You can't download it for free legally, but look around for explorer.exe

I purchased a retrieval program a while back called Restorer2000 pro.  It works great, but the hard drive has to actually physically work.  Mine just tries to spin up like 3 times then gives up completely.
