Test.
Want to show off your keygrip skills? Posting a match demo for review? Here's a nice new easy place to do it:
http://www.banterous.co.uk
Give it a go and tell me what you think :)
It supports q2 demos as well as paintball, as the formats are basically identical.
It's a beta, there are probably many bugs, please report them if you see them :)
If you have Firefox 3.6, Google Chrome, Safari or Opera, please use them instead of IE, as the site uses CSS3, which IE ignores.
-
Love it, clever thinking Vic
-
This is a good idea. Do the demo's automatically get deleted after a certain amount of time? Otherwise wouldn't this use all of your hosting space?
-
Great idea. Made also very nice. I like the stuff like view chat. Will it be easy to find the right demo if there are too many of them? I'd like to see something like: DaRk vs. eX, or something like this - yes could be put in the description, but it makes it more difficult to find it quick.
-
Amazing idea ViciouZ. This will most definitely be used! I know this took you a lot of work to do, so thanks for putting the effort! How often will demo's be removed? ''basically kyuuchi's question''. So do you want people to just upload demo's every so often 'even if not requested' so then a newer player can view better players demo's if they want? Anyways, good idea ViciouZ. :)
-- This should be marked in the 'Demo Request section' so people just use this site instead of some other random file sharing site.

If people do manage to upload 10+GB of demos I'll look into culling the oldest ones, but currently I have so much space it's not really a problem. So currently there is no timeout on demos.

The intention was that people just use it instead of file sharing sites for uploading demo files, not go out of their way to add more stuff. I've got some feedback for ideas such as categories for tournaments, like you suggested, and some from idias about adding a tags system and allowing more info to be specified about the demo when it is uploaded, such as if it's a match/hack report/jump demo.
My current stuff to work on list is basically adding more general information to the site, improving the browse page, adding a search feature and generally tweaking the theme to make it look better.

viciouz you stole my idea so I would like half of the profits now plz!

Better send that letter to the AG's office...
Seriously? o.O

*BUMP*
10/7/10 Update:
- Added additional controls to the browse demo page which should make looking through all the demos much easier.
Is there any chance this could be moved to Demo Requests and stickied? Pleeeeeeeease? :)
-
As soon as I figure out how to sticky. :)

I assume you edit the first post and then hit a sticky button somewhere.

I am 100% sure I told you about that on msn/gtalk/steam/xfire/fb... D:
-
Sorry to bump/double post but there are some new updates:
- Browsing system now goes over multiple pages
- More sorting/filtering options on the browse page
- Private demos that don't appear on the browse page
- Easier to get a link to share with somebody
Coming soon:
Also there are now some ads, 1 set at top of page, hopefully they are not too annoying for everyone.
-
I haven't really tried....but is there a way to upload my whole demos folder(1,682 Files) to that website? And no, I won't upload them one by one :P
-
Next update a comment section?

Isn't it pointless? Who'd like to watch all of your demos.. Just post there your best ones.

Obviously all my demos are great because I'm in them. Geeeez.

Vic: bug report! the filtering thing doesn't keep my settings when i browse to the next page... i.e. the next/prev page links don't include the GET info necessary to keep the filters that were set.
-
"Results" works :)

That would explain why I kept thinking that the pagination code was a tad too easy to write... :P
-
should add a tab or a filter to have it find a specific uploaded demo numbers. i uploaded a demo that wasn't made public, but then when i went back to find it i couldn't, at least i didn't know how to find the demo again. all in all great idea thanks.

Well the idea is that for a private demo you save the link it gives you... they're not very "private" at the moment anyway, I will probably work on that later.
19/2/11 Update:
- Moved the site to demos.banterous.co.uk - all links should continue to work as usual.
- Shows some basic feedback when you upload a demo
- Doesn't load the chat log until you click the tab - this stops the page randomly stopping half way down when loading.
Coming soon:
- Compressed downloads - either transparently compressed with gzip or maybe as a .zip or .rar file
- (Possibly) compressed uploads - upload a .zip of demos and they will all be added
- More detailed upload progress
Other ideas:
- Might kill off vanilla Quake 2 support because nobody seems to be using it
- A whole "banterous" network of subsites which might help to fill the gap that the DP Resource site used to. Maybe another map database, or map reviews blog or something, and a downloads area.
Suggestions/feedback welcome :)

Sounds good. I'd like to contribute in some way, altho right now I don't have much time to do so.
I haven't forgotten that I'd been wanting to make a DP wiki. I chatted with jits on IRC recently about what wiki CMS to use; I'd narrowed it down to DokuWiki, MediaWiki, or PmWiki, all of which have nice features. He had been leaning toward MediaWiki, but he wants to integrate it into this site, which would mean trying to theme MediaWiki to match this site, and that would likely make for an extreme amount of work since MediaWiki isn't really built for lots of theme-wise customization. He said he'd tried DokuWiki before but experienced painfully slow performance which made him shy away from it. I've never messed with it so I can't prove or disprove such performance claims. In light of all that, he began to look at PmWiki favorably (having never messed with it) -- and that was the extent of the conversation.
So, any wiki development should probably be done for inclusion on this official site -- but anything else would be great. I would definitely love to see a new site similar to ye olde DP Resource by sk89q (who, sadly, has since moved on).
EDIT: Vic, I just registered bantero.us and pointed it at your name servers, so just add it as a parked domain in your cPanel and it should start working. :D
-
03/04/11 Update:
- Updated the links the site generates to use the new, shorter "http://bantero.us/demo/<id>" form, thanks to webhead :D
- You can now download demos in zip files, this saves some time for those on slower connections :)
More general news coming soon :)
-
I see what you did there ;)
A few ideas:
- If you're going to offer .zip, you should probably offer .tar.gz (or just .gz I guess, since it's a single file) for our linux friends.
- Also, I was just thinking it would be nice to be able to give demos custom tags, but then I realized that would probably be abused more often than not -- so my idea is that you could add a category system (where you control what categories there are) and then when people upload a demo they can select a category to tag it with. This would make it easier, for example, to see only the demos associated with a certain league.

Done, you can pick between .gz and .bz2 as well. Wanted to do RAR, but the PHP RAR library only supports reading.
-
yeah, .rar is non-free proprietary crap. if you want a high-compression format like that, go with .7z if possible.
-
Anyone using paintball on Linux? ^.^
If you play paintball, you have good connection (at least enough to download 300Kb file o_O if u downloaded installer), so i don't really see need for compresion... (.7z is best)
-

True, but for a lot of demos it halves download time anyway, even if its a small difference, 5sec download is better than 10sec :) also saves bandwidth for those with bandwidth caps.
-
14/04/11 Update:
- Made the theme look a bit snappier
- Tried to redirect everything to use the bantero.us domain and bantero.us/demo/<id>
- JSON API, documentation available at http://bantero.us/demos/api.txt (this has actually been done for a couple of weeks)
Coming soon:
- A lot of internal changes to allow for a map database and other subsites (news, downloads)
- Started working on a toolbar for the bottom of the screen which can lookup players and clans by name/GLS id and search demos/maps/etc
- Probably gonna give up halfway through because nobody cares
- Hopefully not
-
Nice facelift ;-) Font-family is now also good .. good job
-

Not sure how necessary .bz2 is. I'm sure you're not hurting for disk space, but if you ever want to slim down your usage, .bz2 could go.
That is, unless your script compresses the .dm2 on the fly and immediately serves it up.

On the fly ;) It does store the resulting file in a cache folder cause I have unlimited storage, but I can easily delete that if necessary :)
-
Hey, guys, test it ;-) http://stats.bantero.us/ .. we need data. hope, you'll not cheat ;-) to the future i recommend keep same nick ;-)
-
Bump, because:
bantero.us domain has expired.
All demos are still available, just replace "bantero.us" in the URL with "banterous.co.uk". Everything still works.
The domain was bought for me by webhead, who has let it expire, presumably because he no longer plays or works on DP. I'd just like to say thanks for the two years it was running :)
edit: seems Webhead is an absolute don. All links should work as previously. Cheers webhead!
-
Here's a demo of me being a pro!
-
So kind of you, vic.
:)
-
I have disabled downloading of compressed demos, ironically to save space on the server, as I may be switching hosting providers in the next few months. You can still download demos in .dm2 format.
I was very surprised to see uploads as recently as this month, it's nice that people still use it :)

use 10 x1gb of free space at hostinger.com =D
-
As of today, banterous is no longer accepting new uploads.
I am consolidating all my servers and hosting setups with one provider, and attempting to reduce their overall storage and maintenance requirements. Banterous will remain as a read-only site with the existing demos available for download after the change in provider.
Thank you to everyone who used the site in the last however many years, I hope it was helpful.
If anybody is interested in maintaining the website and opening it back up on their own hosting, please get in contact.
-
Thank you for hosting it for so long, it has been helpful :)
-
Storage requirements growing too much, I assume?
-
I can host it on my VPS, it's just 1.7GB of data, yeah?
I can even rewrite it if you want me to do so.

Not really, just old PHP code I don't want to audit or really maintain any more. Left uni and don't have much free time any more, trying to make everything stay secure and run itself :) Thanks for renewing the domain, by the way. Hopefully you would be willing to transfer that to whoever ends up with it next?

1.7GB of data (but with some easy PHP work you should be able to store them gzipped and halve that), some old PHP code and a 15mb MySQL database.
I've got a couple of offers through PM. I'd be happiest handing it over to somebody who would actually improve it, and even better if those who had offered were going to collaborate. There's some old code there that never got finished for doing some analysis on BSP files, and generating HUD numbers, so maybe you could finally make one site with a combined map/demo database that will last DP until it finally dies? Or gets big again :)
Anyway, I'd love to hear what you'd all want to do with it in the thread, would be great to see some collaborative development around this game again. Otherwise it's probably going to ic3y, just because I've known him the longest and he's still around and hosting dp2 content.
-
So let ic3y do it, I'm not going to mess with PHP because I prefer Python + flask.
I can rewrite it though.
-
Hopefully you would be willing to transfer that to whoever ends up with it next?
Of course. Hopefully they're in the US so I can actually transfer it to them.

Iam not good in upgrade some php source. But I think that a collaborative development would be a nice idea.
-
So where can I access the demos now? The sight is down not only for uploads, but for downloads as well? What a shame...
-
Ugh, my hosting provider are being really, really awkward. I'll sort it when I have time and send the files to ic3y
-
Make a free account at mega.co.nz
They hose files for you just zip or rar up the files
And upload. It will give a link with a key you can copy
-
http://banterous.co.uk is back. Everything should work now. Thanks to ViciouZ for the demo and server files.
bantero.us won't work at the moment, I need to contact webhead.
-
Great ! This website is actually used by alot of people and really useful, I hope it will stay alive. .
Oh, there is alot of missing demos, i guess they were being a problem for the website ?
